Attaching to a premiter electricc fence

How do you transfer power from a perimeter electric fence to a strip grazing fence?

Meriel Younger from www.electricfencing.co.uk doesn’t have all the answers… but she does know a lot about electric fencing!

Electric fencing is a simple concept – the power from the energiser flows through the metal of a lead out cable or the metal filaments within the rope, tape or polywire or whatever conductor you are using.  The power is converted by the energiser in to a high volt low amp pulse that travels along your electric fence line, as long as the current can find metal it will travel along it.

With this concept in mind I hope it is now easier to see how you can connect power from a perimeter electric fence to a strip grazing fence.  There are many different ways to do it but it all follow the same concept – metal to metal connection to continue the flow of the current.  So, for example, it would be possible to use crocodile clips and a section of lead out cable – connect the crocodile clips to either end of the metal of the lead out cable.  One end is clipped on to the perimeter fence and the other crocodile clip is connected to the strip grazing fence and hey presto the current will flow around the perimeter and also along the strip grazing fence.

There are ready made line to line connectors available designed by electric fence manufacturers and these are used to transfer the power from line to line or of course a section of lead out cable can be used as described above or simply a length of electric fencing rope, tape or polywire could also be used as long as it is not going to short out on any wood etc.

One further consideration would be – how much capacity has your energiser got?  Can it cope with the extra fencing you are adding into the system?  If that is a yes then you are good to go! Just  remember the concept of it being a metal to metal connection for current transfer and get connecting!
